As you age, your skin changes - and so should your approach to skincare. Have you ever wondered what is the ideal skincare routine you should be using based on your age?
It's no secret that your skin changes as you age. Whether you notice loss of elasticity or volume, a few fine lines here and there, or discoloration, these changes can be a bit stressful as you try to navigate a brand new skincare routine.
Hence, we at Leal bring out a complete guide of the right skincare regimen based on your age to allow you to craft a routine to take care of your skin.
Age 20-29
Most of your teenage years have probably been spent in a manner causing extensive damage to your skin with lifestyle patterns such as lack of sleep, unhealthy food and lots of stress. Hence, it is time to undo the same. It is time to learn some healthy habits such as sunscreen with minimum of SPF 30 and a gentle cleanser.
Include antioxidants in the form of a serum or cream using vitamin C, vitamin E or even green tea extracts into your routine so that you power up your sun protection also. You can also exfoliate one or two times a week to gently get rid of dead skin.
Age 30-39
Your routine can still largely retain the same. You may start to see early signs of aging and your skin may start to become drier and more sensitive. You should start using an anti-ageing cream/serum and a Vitamin A-rich product to help smooth wrinkles and fight anti-ageing.
Avoid products like denatured alcohol in large amounts that take away moisture like drying and start using retinol with a low dosage once a week, apart from your regular cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen routine. Overuse of retinol can cause serious skin damage, irritation and redness which will take months to recover.
Age 40-49
It is that time of your life when the skin loses some of its texture and more wrinkles and age spots begin to appear. You may become prone to extreme dryness and some sagging.
For ultimate moisture retention, it is recommended to include hyaluronic acid into your routine (can be used both day and night), as well as a rich night cream that contains glycerin, ceramides, and or fatty lipids to help encourage skin barrier repair.
Choose products loaded with rosehip oil, which is rich in Vitamin A and helps to reduce pigmentation, reduce wrinkles, and reverse sun damage. A creamy cleanser is also needed apart from an exfoliator and anti-oxidants to maintain moisture levels and increase cell turnover. Overall, your skincare products must be so to serve more than one purpose.
Age 50-59
Post Menopause, your bodies experience a drastic hormonal shift. By this time, your skin has seen a huge drop in its elasticity due to decreased estrogen levels. You may also notice either frequent skin scaling, thinning and dryness during menopause or contact dermatitis and acne breakouts.
Take your lipid-rich moisturizer, anti-ageing products and save yourself from the sun as much as you can. It is important to ensure that your skin is retaining moisture. A mild gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip off natural oils, should be used. Also, bring a ceramide and natural-cholesterol rich cream to repair dry skin.
Age 60 and above
Remember, its never too late to take care of your skin. Grow your skincare routine to include applying sunscreen every day to prevent more signs of ageing, cleansers that don’t dry out your skin and a moisturizer/serum to target specific skincare concerns. The main concern with people in their 60s and beyond is lack of hydration, ageing skin and moisture retention.
